Research Internships:
We work with a team of scientists and students to find genes in the Asian citrus psyllid and identify and characterize them. This insect transmits a bacterial pathogen that has been devastating the citrus industry. We use several different bioinformatics software and online programs to do this work. Once we characterize the genes, then our research partners (and sometimes our students, too) will design experiments to try to disrupt or turn off these genes and kill the insect or stop it from transmitting the disease. This means that accurate genome annotation is very valuable to the citrus research community. See the video overview for more information.
